‘Star Wars’ actor Jake Lloyd faces new health challenge as he struggles with schizophrenia: family

The New York Daily News - 1/30/2020

“Star Wars” actor Jake Lloyd has struggled for years with schizophrenia, but a new diagnosis has complicated his condition.

His family revealed the 30-year-old actor suffers from anosognosia, a condition which causes him to be unaware of his own mental issues.

“We would like to thank everyone for their kind words, their support, and goodwill,” Lloyd’s mother, Lisa, said in a statement posted on Geek News Now on Wednesday.

“Jake has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia,” the statement said. “But unfortunately he also has a symptom called anosognosia which causes a lack of insight into his illness.”

Lloyd, who started acting at age six and played young Anakin Skywalker in the 1999 film, “Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace,” was busted by cops in South Carolina in 2015. He was hit with multiple charges, including resisting arrest and reckless driving.

It was later revealed the actor suffered from schizophrenia, and his family said at the time of the incident he had stopped taking his medication.

Lloyd was undergoing treatment, but his family said in the recent statement the shocking death of his younger sister, Madison, in 2018, proved difficult for him.

“He has moved closer to his family and we are all working hard to help him with this,” the family said in the statement. “He is still a kind and caring person and we hope to have him back to his fun and entertaining self as soon as possible.”

They again thanked fans for the kind words.

“Jake will continue to make progress with the love and support you continue to show,” the statement said.
